Chiefs Face Grueling Stretch as Patrick Mahomes Struggles to Hit Peak Form
The Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up for a challenging stretch of three games in just 11 days, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t exactly brimming with confidence. Coming off a season riddled with closer-than-expected games and uneven performances, the star QB admitted the grind ahead isn’t sitting well.
“All you can do is focus on the game and the practice that you had that day,” Mahomes said. “I prepare my body all year long for this stretch by tailoring my workouts and practice routines. The coaches do a great job managing our workload. But honestly, it’s not a good feeling.”
Mahomes specifically highlighted the physical toll of the schedule, which includes a Christmas Day game against the Pittsburgh Steelers—part of a string that also features matchups with the Browns and Texans. “You never want to play this many games in such a short time,” he added. “It’s just not great for your body. But this is the job, and you’ve got to show up and do it.”
The Chiefs’ inconsistency this season hasn’t made things any easier. While their record keeps them in playoff contention, many of their wins have been narrow escapes, and Mahomes hasn’t consistently played at his usual MVP caliber.
Early Bye Leaves Chiefs Feeling the Strain
Adding to the challenge is the timing of the Chiefs’ bye week, which came early in Week 6. Defensive tackle Chris Jones voiced his frustration, suggesting that such a demanding schedule should come with a later-season bye.
“This is something I’ll bring to the NFLPA,” Jones said. “If a team has a schedule like this, they should get a late-season bye. We don’t need a Week 6 bye … Give it to us in Week 8, Week 10, something like that.”
Head coach Andy Reid took a pragmatic approach. “You just have to manage it,” he said. “It is what it is. You make the best of it and focus on taking care of business during the normal week.”
Road Ahead
The Chiefs, along with the Texans, Steelers, and Ravens, are navigating this tough scheduling quirk. Whether Mahomes can elevate his play and lead Kansas City through the gauntlet will be critical, especially as the team eyes a deep playoff run despite the inconsistencies that have plagued them.
