Travis Hunter Wins Heisman Trophy, Cements Legacy as Colorado’s Two-Way Star
NEW YORK – Travis Hunter etched his name into college football history on Saturday night, winning the coveted Heisman Trophy after an extraordinary season of dominance on both sides of the ball for the Colorado Buffaloes.
The dynamic cornerback and wide receiver became just the second player in Colorado history to claim the prestigious award, joining running back Rashaan Salaam, who won in 1994. Hunter’s historic achievement highlights his remarkable versatility and unmatched impact on the field.
The other Heisman finalists included Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty and quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel of Oregon and Cam Ward of Miami.
A Throwback to a Bygone Era
Hunter’s rare ability to excel on both offense and defense evokes memories of a bygone era in college football. Playing virtually every snap, he proved himself as the first true two-way star in decades.
On offense, Hunter hauled in 92 receptions for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns, propelling the Buffaloes to a 9-3 record and their first bowl game appearance in four years. On defense, he was equally dominant, recording four interceptions, 11 pass breakups, and a game-changing forced fumble in an overtime thriller against Baylor.
A Season of Accolades
The junior from Suwanee, Georgia, followed head coach Deion Sanders from Jackson State to Colorado, making an immediate and undeniable impact. Hunter’s stellar performance this season has earned him a slew of awards, including:
• AP Player of the Year
• Walter Camp Award (National Player of the Year)
• Chuck Bednarik Award (Top Defensive Player)
• Biletnikoff Award (Best Wide Receiver)
A Bright Future Ahead
Hunter’s meteoric rise has also placed him at the top of NFL draft boards. ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. projects him as the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s NFL Draft, making him a once-in-a-generation talent poised for stardom at the next level.
Hunter’s Heisman victory not only solidifies his place in Colorado football lore but also underscores his status as one of the most versatile and electrifying players the sport has ever seen.
